Vienna is the capital and, with 1.8 million inhabitants, the largest city of Austria. With almost 30% of the total population, Vienna is by far the largest city in Austria, as well as its cultural, economic, and political centre.
Vienna is host to many major international organizations such as OPEC, OSCE, and IAEA and also hosts one of the four headquarters of the United Nations (UN). Vienna was rated the best city to live in by Mercer's 2010 - 2017 Quality of Living Index.
German is the official language of the Republic of Austria and is the mother tongue of about 98% of Austrian citizens. Austria has been a member of the European Union since 1995, and since 2002 uses the euro as its currency.
